Using Primary Food to identify the root cause

In my health coaching program, I talk about how we dive deeper into not only what foods you’re actually eating, but also how the other parts of your life are affecting your health, such as career, relationships, exercise, home cooking, etc. These other factors make up what the Institute for Integrative Nutrition calls “Primary Food.”

There’s much more to our health than just what foods we consume, and sometimes the feelings we’re experiencing, such as fatigue or stress, have more to do with other factors of life and we can’t ignore that. We need to break down not only what we’re feeling, but why we may be feeling that way. For example, are you starting a new job? Are you exhausted from your current job? Are you feeling fulfilled in your career?

Whatever the issue may be, it’s necessary to look at every aspect of your life in order to find the root cause and then create actions on how you can improve it. By actually marking down on paper where you feel you’re at in terms of satisfaction with each aspect of life, you can visually see where you need to improve in order to better your overall health.

Finding the root cause of the problem is necessary for actually solving the issue rather than using food or prescription drugs (although some are definitely needed!) as a band-aid to make you feel better.
